Burlington, Vermont's "Queen City", is truly one of the jewels of the Northeast. It is situated on Lake Champlain, the sixth largest lake in the United States, and thus is a boating center for sailors all over the East Coast and Canada. At one time, in the nineteenth century, Burlington was one of the largest lumber ports in the country.
From the lake shore, the city rises eastward where it ends in a hilltop crowned by the ivy-covered brick buildings of the University of Vermont. Views of the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains are available from almost any street corner. The natural beauty of the setting is matched by the city itself. Quiet neighborhoods are lined with homes that represent every architectural style: the dignified elegance of the Federal building; the temple-like Greek Revival; the stately Second Empire; the Romanesque; the Queen Anne; and even a few bungalows from this century.
Church Street, the city's commercial center, is a pedestrian mall with colorful boutiques and sidewalk cafes. In Burlington, one has a sense of a city that works -- that is, it still has a downtown that people enjoy visiting.
Burlington is also the educational center of the state, with four institutions of higher education in the area: the University of Vermont, Champlain College, the Community College of Vermont, and St. Michael's College. Indeed, when college students return each autumn, Burlington's population of 39,000 swells by another 11,000. The students and the college bring an intellectual and cultural vitality to the area which would not be found in most other cities of comparable size.
The University of Vermont Medical School and Fletcher Allen Health Care ensure that the citizens of Northwestern Vermont have the best medical care available in the Northeast.
Burlington is a city where one can enjoy life. The lazy days of summer mean walks on tree-lined streets, swimming in Lake Champlain, boating, fishing, hiking in the Green Mountains, or just leisurely sipping coffee on Church Street. Winter means downhill skiing, skating, ice fishing, hockey, or just sitting by a roasting fire. Burlington is all of these things.
